Helping patients, caregivers and medical professionals to navigate Optune in the UK
Step-by-step guide: How to use the Optune device
Optune is a wearable device designed to deliver Tumour Treating Fields (TTF) therapy. Proper setup and consistent use are essential to maximise its effectiveness. Follow these step-by-step instructions to set up, use, and maintain your Optune device.
1. Prepare your scalp
Since Optune’s electrode arrays must adhere directly to the scalp for optimal performance, proper scalp preparation is crucial.
If you are wearing arrays, soak them off – peeling the arrays off can irritate the skin, so we recommend soaking them off in the shower to minimise skin irritation.
Shave your scalp – Use an electric razor to remove all hair. This should be done every 1-3 days to ensure a smooth surface for the electrodes.
Clean your skin – Use mild soap and water to cleanse your scalp, removing any oils or residues. Dry thoroughly.
Check your skin – Look for any irritation, redness, or cuts. Avoid placing electrodes on broken or irritated skin.
Moisturise your skin – A good simple moisturiser such as Aveeno is normally enough, but helps maintain skin integrity
2. Apply the electrode arrays
The electrode arrays are designed to deliver alternating electric fields to the brain.
Position the arrays correctly – Your healthcare provider will provide a personalized placement map based on your treatment plan. Follow the placement guide carefully.
Peel off the protective backing – Remove the adhesive backing from the electrodes.
Apply the arrays firmly – Press the arrays onto your scalp, ensuring good contact. Smooth them down to avoid air bubbles or loose edges.
3. Connect the arrays to the Optune device
Attach the cables – Connect the electrode array cables to the Optune device’s output ports.
Ensure a secure fit – Make sure all connections are firmly in place before turning on the device.
4. Turn on the Optune device
Power on the device – Press the power button to start treatment.
Check the indicator lights – The device will display status lights indicating proper function.
Monitor alerts – If any error messages appear, refer to the user manual or contact your Device Support Specialist for guidance.
5. Wear the device throughout the day
For the best results, patients are encouraged to wear Optune for at least 18 hours per day. However, there is evidence that wearing it for longer improves outcomes, so we suggest that patients aim to wear it continuously apart from the breaks when patients change arrays.
Use the carrying options – The device can be worn in a shoulder bag, backpack, or belt holster for mobility.
Keep the device charged – If using a battery pack, ensure it is fully charged before heading out.
Take short breaks if needed – You may disconnect for brief periods, such as during showering, but aim for continuous usage.
6. Maintain and replace the electrode arrays
Change the arrays regularly – Electrode arrays should be replaced every 2-3 days or sooner if they become loose or uncomfortable.
Clean your scalp – When replacing electrodes, gently clean your scalp before applying new ones.
Store unused arrays properly – Keep replacement arrays in a cool, dry place.
7. Troubleshooting and support
Monitor your skin – If you experience irritation or discomfort, consult your doctor for guidance. We have a staged approach to skin care, starting with some simple tips, and working up to review by a dermatologist.
Check the device screen for alerts – Error codes may indicate issues with connectivity or device function.
Contact support if needed – Optune provides a Device Support Specialist to assist with any technical issues or questions.
Make use of the Optune Support Group and the WhatsApp group to help maximise your wear-time. We have some very experienced patients in the group who can share their experience.
By following these steps, you can effectively use Optune as part of your treatment plan, ensuring the best possible outcomes. If you need further assistance, reach out to your healthcare team or Optune’s support services.
